This release marks the 75th birthday of the distinguished sitarist Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan, who was born in 1929 in Jawra, Madhya Pradesh. This recording was made in Jaipur on 18th june 1968, with Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan accompanied on the tabla by Sadashiv Pawar. Although the recording is incomplete and has the occasional blemish, it remains a valuable record of a great musician, one that will be welcomed by all his many admirers. This performance features the romantic, thumri-oriented raga Zilla Kafi. This is a hybrid of two light modes sharing the same scale, Kafi thaat, which has the 3rd and 7th notes flat (Ga and Ni komal)
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni (1 2 3b 4 5 6 7b)
(Sa is approximately C# on this recording)
Kafi, which is believed by some to have been learned from Central Asian musicians in the Muslim period, is a thumri raga associated with spring and the holi festival.
