Reviews/Notes
Known Facts [*]Argyris Koulouris is mostly known as the "fourth" member of Aphrodite's Child, who only made it just in time to France to work on their last album "666". After that he also contributed to an obscure single by "Alpha Beta" (1971), Vangelis' albums "The Dragon" (1971) and "See you later" (1980), as well as Demis Roussos' album "Reflection" in 1984... [*]Robert Fitoussi is mostly known for his contribution to this album, but in the same year he also wrote the song "Who", which was first released in 1974 under the pseudonym "Odyssey"... [*]Robert and Vangelis met shortly after Vangelis broke up with Aphrodite's Child, in a record company named "La Compagnie", where Vangelis had stocked all his equipment. Vangelis played something and Robert sang to it, they started working together and became friends. [*]Robert Fitoussi is more widely known as "F.R. David" who made fame with his hit single "Words" in 1981. [*]Richelle Dassin as a lyricist also worked with Vangelis for the songs that Vangelis recorded with Melina Mercouri that same year.
vangelismovements.com - 1973 saw Vangelis working on all kinds of different projects, the most important one in the end leading up to the album "Earth". It was to be Vangelis' last album made in Paris, the year after he moved to London. "Earth" is said to be inspired by ancient (pre-Christian) Greek or Dorian music. The title is a reference to the primitive roots of the album. It also appears that the album is the final result of a concept project that was initially titled "Charge". The project generated so much music that didn't make it into the final album. Songs such as "Friends", "The river", "Sunday in Central Park", "The witches are out " and "Passer by" which are included on the Spheric-list, for some reason didn't make the final cut and were never heard of again...
amazon.com - Aphrodite's Child was already history before 666 even came out. The infinity symbol cut with Irene Papas was the reason for the album's delay, since the group refused to remove the track from the album. Vangelis then teamed with some other musicians and recorded two albums in 1971, Hypothesis and The Dragon, neither of them released at the time (they were released around 1978), and then Vangelis wanted those two albums withdrawn (that explains why those two albums never saw the light of day on CD). 1973's Earth seems like a natural continuation of the Aphrodite's Child sound, if the group made it to 1973, this is how it would sound like. But you'll also notice the album pointed to the style he would explore on his own as well. Here he was helped by guitarist Anargyros "Silver" Koulouris, ex-Aphrodite's Child (he was on 666, but not on their previous, late '60s pop/psychedelic albums) and bassist/vocalist Robert Fitoussi. This was one of the rare Vangelis solo albums to feature vocals, other than See You Later and Jon Anderson's help on "So Long Ago, So Clear" on Heaven & Hell. Of course I didn't mention the Jon & Vangelis albums. "Come On" sounds like a missing Aphrodite's Child song. It rocks, complete with guitar. "We Were All Uprooted" is a much more mellow piece with a strong Greek ethnic feel. This style was explored once again when Vangelis worked on Irene Papas' album Odes (1979). "Sunny Earth" oddly explores Native American styles at the beginning with the chanting, obviously the sound of a rain dance, before heading on to Greek ethnic influences that you heard on "We Were All Uprooted". "He-O" and "Let It Happen" are more fantastic Aphrodite's Child-like vocal cuts, I think the latter is perhaps the finest cut on the whole album. "My Face in the Rain" sounds more like a combination of Aphrodite's Child and Vangelis' own 'Apocalypse Des Animaux. In fact I'm not too far off to say this sounds more like a transistional album, pointing to the direction that he would pursue on his solo career, while still having that Aphrodite's Child sound. No doubt about it, if you enjoy 666 and L'Apocalypse Des Animaux, you're going to need this album.
------------------------- We Were All Uprooted Vangelis
We were all uprooted The earth was stolen from beneath our feet We became a Diaspora An unnamed nation of bastards We channeled our roots to the pulse of light deep within the galaxies of our mind Our breath was the sky Our dreams were water We claimed the wilderness We recognized each other

Let It Happen Vangelis
Let it happen Honey don't you live on the edge of your life Let it happen Honey don't you live on the edge of a sigh Let it happen Honey don't you live on the edge of a smile Let it happen Honey don't you live on the edge of your time Baby all you got to do Is let the rythm get to you

My Face In The Rain Vangelis
My face in the rain I walk all alone It's Sunday time is slow I'm happy that is all I know My face into the sun My life is my own It's Sunday time is slow I am happy that is all I know
My thoughts in the rain I walk all alone It's Sunday time is slow I am happy that is all I know
A Song Vangelis
I would like to write a song That is so vibrant and so intimate That the earth would adopt it As if it had sprung like the stream From the land's memory As if no one had written it but life itself And my song would travel along From bird to wing, to tree To breeze to heart to breath to song Because a song belongs to everyone Like the spring
