Back From The Grave part 1 “Rockin’ 1960s Punkers”
Unlike many garage rock compilations, the Back From The Grave series focuses exclusively on the rawer and more aggressive side of the genre. Psychedelic rock is categorically excluded. The series also includes very few pop or folk oriented songs. As a result, the albums are primarily populated by louder songs that are characterized by fuzztone guitars, rough vocals, and are clearly influenced by groups such as Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, the early Kinks, and the Pretty Things. The lyrics and performances tended to focus on anger, lust, and cheating girlfriends, matching the often chaotic music. According to the liner notes, the songs were recorded by American groups, between 1964 and 1967.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Here is one of the best compilations ever put together in the genre of 60s garage band music. The songs are incredible, and as a bonus there is a hysterically cheap and insultingly moronic cartoon on the front. Tim Warren of Crypt Records concentrates on the rawest, most primitive, hardest hitting teen rawk’n’roll singles of the era. While the Nuggets and Pebbles comps featured a fair dose of psychedelia, there is none of that here. Several of these songs have that 60s garage band sound that everyone loves, but with the anarchy and aggression of 70s punk rock. And then there is also the influence of greasy homegrown American r’n’b. Right out of the gate, the Elite’s “My Confusion” comes out swinging fast and furious, and the never-been-hits just keep coming. The Jujus’ snarly “Do You Understand Me” even has a motorcycle being revved up in the studio. The Alarm Clocks come at you with the godlike "Yeah"; they know they've got "No Reason To Complain." The Lyrics’ “They Can’t Hurt Me” is one of the great pissoff, kissoff tunes of all time. The Outsiders race through a super, supercharged version of “Summertime Blues.” The Banshees’ “They Prefer Blondes” and the Triumphs’ “Surfside Date” both sound ridiculously hopped up. And the Rats’ two-part “Rats Revenge,” the Swamp Rats’ “Psycho,” Ralph Nielsen and the Chancellors’ “Scream” and the Novas’ “The Crusher” are all insane and certainly beyond any hope of redemption. Yeah indeed!!
Note: this CD “part 1” is actually most of volumes 1 and 2 of the eight-volume vinyl series. A few songs from those LPs were left out of the CD release.
