EP: 1 SATURDAY'S CHILDREN (Sundazed SEP 2 126) 1997
NB: (1) is a double 7", which contains their three Dunwich 45s plus A Man With Money and Tomorrow Is Her Name.
45s: 1 You Don't Know Better/Born On Saturday (Dunwich 139) 1966 2 Deck Five/Christmas Sounds (Dunwich 144) 1966 3 Leave That Baby Alone/I Hardly Know Her (Dunwich 156) 1967
Popular in their hometown of Chicago and almost unknown elsewhere, the band were previously known as Dalek/Engam: The Blackstones, and as such also recorded a version of You Don't Know Better.
Deck Five, is a rip-off of Dave Brubeck's 1961 hit Take Five and even includes a melody line from We Three Kings Of Orient Are. Nonetheless, it contains some nice three part harmonies and some pleasing organ. You'll also find their otherwise unreleased recording of The Everly Brothers' song Man With Money on the Early Chicago compilation. This recording dates from an August 1966 session which also produced their first 45.
The 'A' side of their last single, Leave That Baby Alone, was written by Randy Newman.
Jeff Boyan went on to join H.P. Lovecraft and relocated with them to California. He later played for Hezikah. Dave Carter also later played with The Cryan' Shames.
Retrospecive compilation appearances have included: Deck Five on Mindrocker, Vol. 2 (LP); Wisconsin Electric Co. Radio Spot, Man With Money and Leave That Baby Alone on Oh Yeah! The Best Of Dunwich Records (CD); Tomorrow Is Her Name and Man With Money on The Dunwich Records Story (LP); Born On Saturday, You Don't Know Better, Tomorrow Is Her Name and Deck Five on If You're Ready - The Best Of Dunwich... Vol. 2 (CD).
