...Included here the hallucinogenic psych garage happenings of the mighty Gollum - a little private pressing unearthed from that vintage year of prog 1974, those preferring a spot of Hendrix styled grind (Lee Mavers - you'd do well to take note) check in to Crowd + 1's don't hold back. Then there's some psychotic swamp opera in the shape of the Blossum Toes peace loving man, while Cramps lovin' dead heads retune your antennas for the Rotguts primal mutant voodoo-billy. Pick of the first CD though by some distance are the Ukuleles of Halifax version of Spinning Wheel - imagine it - arm over 30 Canadian women with ukuleles, lock them in a classroom, feed them e number riddled sweets and teeth rotting high as a kite sugar laced refreshments - the result not as frightening as you'd expect. A precursor for issue 8 which is mooted to have a Canadian theme. -losingtoday.com
In other psychedelic news, a brief shout-out to the new edition of Galactic Zoo Dossier, a very irregular and very enjoyable fanzine out of Chicago. There's a great double CD with this issue, too. CD1 is called "Teenage Meadows Of Infinity: Rare Psychs And Stomps" and seems to be the product of an insane and fantastic record collection - lots of the tracks come from Chicago private press albums. One is so obscure they can't find the name of the band, though the notes describe it accurately as "a fledgling Malcolm Mooney fronting The Shaggs".
A nice Stooges track ("Cock In My Pocket") is the big name amongst Gollum, the fantastic Sixth Station, The Ukuleles Of Halifax etc. My favourite, though, comes from The Wheeling High School Jazz Band, who sound like a cross between Sun Ra and Gil Evans and absolutely nothing like a school band. - uncut.co.uk
