Wara - El Inca (1973)
Revista SAMPLER NO 18
Review:
Extremely obscure (and quite rare) prog album from Bolivia recorded in 1973. Wara was a well respected rock band in Bolivia - this is their first album. Musically similar to the early Los Jaivas albums. Lots of latin folk influences but integrated with organ, searing electric guitar leads. The five piece is augmented with flute, strings, oboe. Nataniel Gonzales' vocals have a real west coast feel. Obviously not transferred from master tapes but pretty listenable. An interesting prog artifact that I really enjoyed.
Another Review:
Hidden behind a veil of mist high in the Andes for over 30 years, uncovering Wara's 1972 debut El Inca is a real coup! The Bolivian quintet (V/G/B/K/D) is joined by musicos invitados providing native musical structures on flute, oboe, cello and violin, while the messed-up Farfisa throughout evokes the mournful wheeze of Mexico's El Tarro de Mostaza. An interesting and unique mix. Masters of longevity, the band continued to release records in different styles well into the 21st century. For fans of all Latin American '70s rock musics.
