      Reviews/Notes

      CD Universe:

British import edition, this includes nine bonus tracks, including remixes, unreleased instrumentals, and in-studio chatter. With IN ROCK, Deep Purple added vocalist Ian Gillan into the line-up, a decision that irrevocably changed their fortunes. IN ROCK is one of the genre's definitive albums, combining hard-edged riffs with virtuoso technique, topped by Gillan's full-throated roar. Few singers could survive the instrumental power beneath him, but this he does with room to spare, reacting to and emphasizing his colleagues' musical prowess. Chock-full of material destined to become Deep Purple anthems, later releases were evaluated against this trail-blazing, heavy rock collection.
      ..................
This sludgy, plodding, powerful and raw album from 1970 is a headbanger's delight. It's not Purple's most polished or best album, but it is a true testament to the power and fury that they became known for. My favorite song is Flight of the Rat, which is one of the most underrated songs in the entire Purple catalog. It features a hard driving rhythm section from Blackmore, Glover and Paice, a wild Hammond organ solo from Jon Lord and a powerful drum solo from Ian Paice; it is a true microcosm of Purple's trademark style. There are some real gems in the bonus tracks, too. The unedited, remixed version of Black Night features extended soloing from Blackmore and is much cleaner sounding than the original which sounded muddy and had the guitar solo edited short. Jam Stew really cooks. And the piano version of Speed King is great with its rhythm and blues feel. This 25th Anniversary Edition is a steal at the price it is being sold for, so please, headbangers, do yourself a favor and get this NOW.

      Notes about this EMI-Uden release
A remixed and extended anniversary edition was first issued with a slaughtered version of "Living wreck" and a prematurely cut-off version of "Hard lovin' man". This was soon corrected though. In case of doubt, according to Simon Robinson (in DTB 48:7), one way to tell a corrected release from a faulty one is by reading the shiny side of the actual disc: the faulty one says "EMI Swindon" while the corrected one says "EMI Uden". We are told by fans that discs printed with "EMI UK" also are faulty.
