AMAZON Excellent CD that collects the best tracks by the talented female artists signed to EMI's French labels. British stars like Sandie Shaw recorded material exclusively for France - and she's heard with her rare French-only track "Rien N'est Fini". Remastered from the original sources at Abbey Road, La Belle Epoque - EMI's French Girls 1965-68 presents these 20 tracks as they've never been heard before. Some tracks have previously been included on French compilations or bootlegs, however, the sound quality here is a revelation. Original mono and stereo have been used, preserving the integrity of the original recordings. EMI. 2007.

Fab female pop from the French scene of the 60s -- a wonderful collection of tunes that features a fair number of artists that we've never heard before! The set goes way past the over-compiled, too-familiar French hits of the time -- and moves into the world of the hippest jangle pop and yeh-yeh tunes -- many of which have a slightly funky or mod undercurrent at the bottom! This is definitely the kind of older French work that's appealing to younger 21st Century ears -- far different than some of the more emotive pop of bigger names, and much more in the style of the groovier grooves that always live up to the best imagined version of Paris in the 60s! Most artists are French, but Sandie Shaw also checks in with one number too -- and the set features a total of 20 tracks that include "Les Papillons Noirs" by Michel Arnaud with Serge Gainsbourg, "Partie De Dames" by Liz Brady, "Les Mains Dans Les Poches" by Les Roche Martin, "La Musique Et La Danse" by Christie Laume, "Tu Te Moques De Moi" by Ria Bartok, "Amuse-Toi Bien" by Alice Dona, "Bas Les Pattes" by Liz Brady, "J'y Pense Tout Bas" by Ria Bartok, "Les Trois Coleurs De L'Amour" by Alice Dona, "Tu As Peur De Bruit" by Les Roche Martin, and "Sans Avoir Rien Donne" by Anne Kern. © 1996-2008, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

La Belle Epoque: EMI's French Girls 1965-1968 celebrates the era of the miniskirt by pulling together some of France's most stellar femmes du pop from a period when sexy, singing gals, on both sides of La Manche, were all the rage. Those three years of eternal spring found women dominating not only the charts but the clubs as well, with a breezy, unconscious sexiness that never seemed to go out of style. These songs age remarkably well and still hold an air of exquisite hipness and cosmopolitan sophistication that no other era (save perhaps Mike Alway's jet-setting El Records ventures from the '80s) seems to evoke. This is escapist pop of the highest order -- and essential. ~ J. Scott McClintock, All Music Guide
