What all these vintage blues recordings are doing under the Stax banner is a mystery, but just be thankful that they're here because they amount to a well-chosen batch of obscure classics. There are a lot of tunes aboard that simply don't make the rounds on these type of compilations usually; it's a real joy to hear unknown delights like Frankie lee Sims' "Lucy Mae Blues," Billy Boy Arnold's "I Wish You Would," Jimmy Reed's rare "I Found My Baby," Eddie Taylor's "Big Town Playboy," Guitar Gable's "Irene," and Larry Birdsong's "Pleadin' for Love." Another surprise bonus is the production foul-up on Little Walter's "Last Night," inserting the alternate take for the hit version. Tracks from Elmore James, Jimmy Liggins, Camille Howard, Piano Red, Mercy Dee Walton, Larry Davis, Joe Morris with Laurie Tate, Ted Taylor, Little Johnnie Taylor, and Little Milton round out the set. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
