After the domination of British acts during the Sixties, it seemed as if the American rock empire was striking back when they unleashed Electric Flag, Moby Grape, Blood Sweat & Tears, Spirit and the proudly named United States Of America. The word ‘underground’ seems almost a misnomer, as many of the acts on this superb 10-track compilation are indeed household names - notably Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Leonard Cohen. Electric Flag’s powerful ‘Killing Floor’ and Big Brother & The Holding Company’s ‘Piece Of My Heart’ are among the high spots of this legendary 1970 compilation album.
