Fit & Limo - Ginnistan (2002)
“Ginnistan is the latest addition to the hopefully forever-swelling discography of the German husband and wife duo Fit&Limo. They´re still on September Gurls, and they can still be found somewhere in the midst of late-night acid-folk songwriting, but if there ever is a link between the most folky aspects of Fit&Limo and Limo´s more drone oriented work as Discolor, this is surely the ride to take. The first part of this epic journey (CD or double LP) sounds quite familiar though with rich folk/psych compositions, including traditional and exotic folk instruments, playing in rather uncommon time signatures. The further we to into this concept album the more cosmic and droning things tend to get. But even in the most intensely meditative and ambient textures like in the glorious Der Kosmische Pfad, there is something that keeps us right on the foundation of folk music, thus preventing the record from becoming too diverse or loosely knit. Instead this feels like a natural development where the unquestionable center piece, the 21-minute opus Upper And Lower Ginnistan close things on a highly improvisational note. As the track progresses, it moves effortlessly from the spiritual energy of Sun Ra and jazz-inspired emotion to something a whole lot more Krautish. In this very moment they manage to conjure up visions of the heavenly light of folks like Popol Vuh and to a certain extent even Tangerine Dream. If that´s not enough for you guys, I´m just not sure what you´re looking for.” (Ptolemaic Terrascope, UK)
